PSA group diesels are among the most common vehicles we see with DPF problems. Here is why they block, what the fault codes mean, and how to fix it properly.

Peugeot and Citroen diesel vehicles share the same PSA HDi engine family, and that shared platform means they also share many of the same DPF characteristics and problems. From the Berlingo van to the 308 hatchback, blocked DPF filters are a consistent issue across the range.

Why PSA Diesels Block More Often

The PSA HDi diesel engine family is well-engineered but has characteristics that make the DPF more susceptible to blocking compared to some other makes.

Tight Regeneration Windows

PSA diesel engines require exhaust temperatures of around 550 to 600 degrees Celsius to initiate passive regeneration. In stop-start urban traffic — which is how most Berlingo, Partner, and smaller PSA diesel cars are actually used — exhaust temperatures rarely stay high enough for long enough to complete a full burn-off cycle. The filter fills with soot gradually until a blockage triggers a fault.

FAP vs DPF Terminology

Peugeot and Citroen sometimes refer to the diesel particulate filter as a FAP (Filtre à Particules). FAP and DPF are the same component. Some earlier PSA FAP systems also used a dedicated additive fluid called Eolys, which gets injected into the fuel to lower the combustion temperature of soot. Vehicles with an Eolys tank have an additional fluid that needs topping up when the tank runs low.

Small Displacement Engines

The 1.4, 1.6, and 1.9 litre HDi engines found across the range run at lower exhaust temperatures than larger displacement engines. This makes passive regeneration harder to achieve during typical urban use, and means these vehicles are more reliant on active regeneration triggered by the engine management system.

Urban Van Use

PSA commercial vehicles including the Berlingo, Partner, Dispatch, Expert, Boxer, and Relay are widely used in trades and local deliveries. These use patterns — frequent short trips, urban idling, stop-start driving — are exactly the conditions that prevent regeneration and cause blockage over time.

Eolys Additive Check

If your Peugeot or Citroen has an Eolys tank (common on pre-Euro 6 models), check the additive level when you have the DPF cleaned. Running out of Eolys affects how the filter regenerates and can contribute to repeated blockages.

Common DPF Fault Codes on Peugeot and Citroen

When a PSA diesel’s DPF has a problem, the engine management system logs one or more fault codes that a diagnostic scanner can read.

Fault codes alone do not confirm whether cleaning will fix the problem. A P2002 that keeps returning after repeated cleans may indicate a secondary engine fault — such as an injector over-fuelling, an EGR valve stuck open, or an oil burning issue — that is continuously reloading the filter. In those cases, cleaning the DPF without addressing the root cause just delays the problem.

DPF Warning Light Stages Explained

Peugeot and Citroen use a staged warning light system for DPF problems. The sequence varies slightly between models, but here is the general pattern.

Stage 1 — DPF Light On (Amber)

The DPF warning light illuminates without other lights showing. The filter is approaching its soot load limit and the vehicle is requesting a regeneration. You can often clear this by taking the car on a motorway run at speeds above 60 mph for 20 to 30 minutes, keeping the revs above 2,000 rpm.

Stage 2 — DPF Light and Engine Management Light

Both lights are showing. Regeneration has not completed during stage 1 and the soot load is now high enough to trigger the engine management system. A forced regeneration via diagnostic equipment is usually needed at this stage — a motorway run alone will typically not resolve it.

Stage 3 — Multiple Warning Lights, Possible Limp Mode

Multiple warning lights are active and the vehicle may have gone into limp mode. The DPF is severely blocked. An off-car clean or, in extreme cases, replacement is the likely outcome.

Do Not Ignore Stage 3 Symptoms

A severely blocked DPF increases back pressure in the exhaust system, which can force exhaust gases into the engine oil through the turbo seals. This dilutes the engine oil and can damage the turbo, injectors, and engine internals if left unaddressed.

Which Peugeot and Citroen Models Are Most Affected?

Virtually all Peugeot and Citroen diesel models from 2007 onwards are fitted with a DPF, but some are more frequently affected due to their typical use patterns.

High-Risk Models

  • Citroen Berlingo and Peugeot Partner — Extremely common in DPF clinics. Used predominantly for local deliveries and short urban runs. The 1.6 HDi engine is the most frequently seen.
  • Citroen Dispatch and Peugeot Expert — Medium-sized vans with similar usage patterns.
  • Peugeot 308 and Citroen C4 — Very widely sold family hatchbacks. The 1.6 HDi versions see high DPF blockage rates in urban use.
  • Peugeot 3008 and 5008 — Crossovers with higher kerb weights that place more demand on the engine in urban use, making regeneration harder to achieve.
  • Citroen Relay and Peugeot Boxer — Large vans regularly used for local deliveries. The 2.2 HDi engine is the most commonly seen variant.

Can You Force a Regeneration on a Peugeot or Citroen?

Yes — most PSA diesel vehicles support a forced regeneration procedure that can be triggered through compatible diagnostic equipment, such as a Peugeot Planet diagnostic system or iCarsoft CP Pro. A forced regeneration heats the exhaust to the temperature needed to burn off the soot, even if the vehicle is stationary. The procedure usually takes 20 to 30 minutes.

A forced regeneration is not the same as a professional DPF clean. It burns off soot but does nothing about ash — the non-combustible residue that builds up over tens of thousands of miles. If the filter is ash-loaded rather than soot-loaded, professional cleaning is needed.

Cleaning vs Replacing a PSA DPF

Replacing a DPF on a Peugeot or Citroen is expensive. New OEM DPFs for common PSA models typically cost between £600 and £1,800 before fitting. Professional DPF cleaning costs substantially less and, if the filter substrate is not cracked or physically damaged, restores flow performance to a level comparable to a new unit. We flow-test before and after every clean so you get measurable evidence of the result.

Cleaning makes sense when the filter is blocked with soot or ash but the ceramic substrate is intact. Replacement is necessary when the substrate is cracked, melted, or when repeated cleanings have not resolved the problem because of an underlying engine fault.

What is the Eolys additive and does my car need it?

Eolys is a proprietary fluid additive used in some Peugeot and Citroen FAP systems. Not all PSA models use it — later Euro 6 vehicles typically do not. If your vehicle has an Eolys tank, it should be topped up at service intervals.

Will cleaning fix the P2002 fault code on my Peugeot?
