Ford Ranger DPF Issues
The Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCi and 3.2 TDCi are both well-known for DPF problems, particularly in models from 2011 onwards. The 2.2 engine is the more commonly affected of the two — it was designed primarily for economical operation rather than sustained high-temperature running, and it struggles to maintain the exhaust temperatures needed for successful regeneration on short routes.

The Mitsubishi L200 — sold in Series 4 and Series 5 form — is one of the more DPF-sensitive pickups on the market. The 2.4 Di-D engine used in the Series 5 is capable and efficient, but it shares the common pickup truck problem of insufficient regeneration temperatures during typical use.
L200 owners often report the DPF light coming on regularly despite doing what they believe are sufficient longer runs. The issue in many cases is that the regeneration cycle is initiating but being cut short — either because the journey ends before it can complete, or because an underlying sensor fault is causing it to abort. Repeated incomplete regenerations push the soot level higher each time until the vehicle enters a blocked state.

How Towing Affects the DPF
Towing a trailer or caravan places significant additional demand on the engine. To maintain speed under load, the engine delivers more fuel per cycle — which means more soot output. At the same time, the higher engine load can actually help regeneration in some conditions by raising exhaust temperatures. But if the towing is done at low speeds, on hilly terrain, or with the engine working hard at below-motorway speeds, the regeneration conditions are rarely met.
The practical upshot for pickup owners who tow regularly: the DPF is accumulating soot faster than usual, and if those longer towing runs aren’t at sufficient speed and sustained duration, it will block faster than a vehicle used for straightforward commuting.
